She used to have me as a help
In her kitchen
My Brazilian grandmother.
With a wrinkly finger
She would point at a bowl of three
Round, naked tomatoes
(because she always have them peeled)
And passes me her sharpest
Knife.
"With the flesh so soft, the juice will gush out if you force it
With a lesser knife," she said
To me,
As if I couldn't work out as much myself.
But here the matriarch was letting me in on a secret of her trade.
What had I to complain?
And when my job was done
She would give me a satisfied smile.
She made it feel like a perfect meal.
When really they were
Only
Three round, naked tomatoes.

The sight of Em's face blurs with the water in his eyes, Ken is crying and he doesn't even know why. Em looks weary. Em is sitting on Ken's stomach; blowing clove flavoured smoke into his mouth, and there follows pure bliss.
What happens below is an act that disconnects Ken's pelvis from his body, until it becomes anonymous, the push and pull, and the smoke that links their ownerless mouths. Em is on top of him, around him, tight and warm and it almost feels bad, like an uninvited intrusion from his side. Ken closes his eyes and what creeps into his mind is the image of Em with her lanky girlfriend, sitting a

Because I'm not sure I care
There's so much left to say
Memories play for me to see

The movement of time blurs my vision
Maybe this is where we end?

This is one type broken I can't mend
So my love no longer falls as tears.
Now I know where my heart lies
And what the secrets are that it hides
For centauries life's moved on
And I can finally see that's how it's meant to be
There is nothing wrong with the changes life brings

This poem reminds me of the joy of simple food and how wonderful it is to share that joy from one generation to the next.. and sometime in the future, some simple food that nourishes the body can also nourish the soul...
